In Lagos Over 54 cars in flames as petrol tanker explodes at Berger

A Petrol tanker and a long line of cars are currently on fire on Otedola Bridge in the Berger area of Lagos, the state Rapid Response Squad (RSS) tweeted around 5 pm on Thursday, June 28. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos Fire Service have mobilised personnel to the scene to put out the fire which had spread to other cars on the lanes. Eyewitnesses say the accident occurred after a tanker laden with petrol had a brake failure and hit the median of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway; the busiest expressway and gateway into the nation's commercial capital. What followed was a bang and a stream of fire that immediately engulfed four lanes of chaotic traffic. Latest reports reaching the Pulse newsroom say some 9 bodies have been recovered with casualty figures said to be a lot higher. Some commuters were trapped in their cars when the tanker spilled its contents and exploded in balls of fire. — Rapid Response Squad (@) 2013-07-22 14:22:09.0

UN React to Nigerian government about the killings in Plateau and surrounding states

The Secretary General of the United Nations, UN, António Guterres, has expressed concern over the killing of innocent Nigerians in Plateau and surrounding states. He also expressed worries over the latest Plateau attacks by Fulani herdsmen that claimed the lives of almost 200 villagers on Saturday. Guterres, in a statement by his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, on Thursday, urged all concerned governments, regional organisations, civil society and other relevant actors to work together to find acceptable and lasting solutions to the conflicts. He described the trend as being detrimental to regional stability. The statement reads, “The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the increasing frequency, intensity, complexity and geographic scope of violent conflict between farmers and herders, as well as related banditry, extortion and cattle rustling, in several countries across West and Central Africa. “He condemns the resulting loss of life, property and livelihoods, as

World Cup 2018: FIFA punishes Maradona for raising middle fingers at Nigerian fans

Diego Maradona will no longer be paid as an ambassador of world soccer governing body, FIFA. This is following the Argentina legend’s failure to control his emotions during their 2-1 win over Nigeria in the World Cup last Group D game on Tuesday. The football icon celebrated Marcos Rojo’s winning goal for Argentina by raising his middle finger at fans. FIFA termed his behaviour as embarrassing and provocative hence he will no longer receive the £10,000 he was receiving from the world soccer governing body, according to OwnGoal. Maradona also ignored doctors advice not to watch the final minutes of the clash thereby putting his health in danger. FIFA has also warned him to be of good conduct in the remaining games he will attend at the World Cup. A possible stadium ban await the former Napoli forward if he acts in same manner like he did against Nigeria.
